2021 Home Design Trends

The year of 2020 shook every industry in some form or another. Some felt large hits to their books, while others capitalized on the changing environment and gained marketshare and/or profit.

The housing and construction industries specifically saw quite a bit of strength. As individuals and families were spending more time in their homes with virtual education, working from home, etc., everyone had time to reassess what was working and what wasn’t.

Many of my new real estate clients throughout the 2020 faced the question of whether they needed more space to adjust to their growing needs inside their home. They were also prioritizing private outdoor space. Others didn’t want to leave their house and instead wanted to rethink nooks and crannies to adapt to their families specific needs. With all of this change and adoption has come some pretty exciting home trends that we are now seeing as we start 2021.

All I can say is If you don’t want to design a new house after you read this post I will be shocked! I’m like a kid in a candy store right now, itchy to get my sugar high…or in this case an interior design high. Is it logical to want to buy a new home just so you can design it even though you don’t need the space or the added expense? Yes? Perfect! Maybe 2021 will be the year that I stop being frugal and bite the bullet.

Looking through all of the trends I’ve been seeing pop up over the last few months has been so much fun! Some of these you might not be surprised by, while others are pushing the envelope. I’m excited to see what plays out and how all of my favorite designers get creative this year. It’s amazing to see the transformations year after year!

With that, I’ll leave you to it. Here are my top 2021 home trends that I have been seeing in the market lately, that I think will be making a big splash this year. I have a feeling you will love every one of them.

Top Colors

We are beginning to see quite a shift into rich color tones. Deep, moody hues of burgundies, greens, blues and blacks are becoming much more popular and my guess, will play a bigger role in 2021. Many people have not yet taken the plunge with adding these colors in focal rooms though. Rather, secondary rooms are where most are getting creative and playing with trending color tones. Designers of course lead the way and are getting adventurous with kitchen cabinetry and tile, pulling in deep statement colors to change things up from our beloved whites. Gone are the days where everything is light grey and white.

Ceilings and Trim

Wallpaper has begun to trend quite a bit as of late, and not only that but I am beginning to see it being applied to ceilings! If you’re not feeling that adventurous, contrasted ceilings and trim are also being presented through the use of paint. No matter what the application material is, I am betting that you will start picking up on a lot of contrast color block statements. My personal preference would be to lean in with paint first. It’s easier to update, but then again, I’m not a big risk taker until I see something I love!

Goodbye Open Concept

I’m interested to see if this one plays out. Open concept has been an ongoing push for many of my clients over the last couple of years. However, now that I am seeing many family homes becoming where they live, work and play, I believe that we will begin to see a shift to a bit more separation. Similar to paint neutral paint colors and cabinetry, this one will most likely take a longer period of time to transition out of open concept into more divided, private spaces. Personally, I’m open to both. I prefer to have a bit wider doorways for visibility, but also like designated layouts for activities and furniture.

Increased Contrast Veining in Countertops

All I can say is GORGEOUS! Amber Interiors is hands down one of my favorite designers and she set the bar high with her bathroom. She nailed it in my opinion. Whether it be a floating vanity or stand alone vanity like these, you will be seeing more chunky stone countertops with detailed veining. The high contrast plays a big role in elevating the mix of materials in any space. Gone are the days of 3 cm countertops (unless of your being budget friendly like me with my investment property). Countertops aren’t the only ones feeling this shift though. Get ready to see more of this contrast veining playing a bigger role in backsplashes, showers, etc.

Diamond Pattern Flooring

I can’t help but notice that diamond pattern flooring is on repeat across so many of my favorite interior designer’s projects. From Chris Loves Julia to The Fox Group, this is no doubt a trend that we will be seeing more of this year. The black and white diamond pattern (typically with some form of marble veining appearance) so far is my personal favorite that I’ve seen. A few have played with more terracotta and neutrals, so I’m interested to see what else pops up over the coming months. No matter if it’s in an entry way, bathroom, dining room, or mudroom it’s a clear fan favorite that works.

Archways

Last but not least are archways! If you haven’t noticed in a couple of my photos above, this one is blowing up and is by far my personal favorite. The added element of depth and interest an archway can bring to a room brings a sense of heightened character. These beautiful architectural details are being leveraged across windows, doorways, showers, and more. They bring an elevated feel to any room, while also tie into historic details. It always amazes me how styles from past decades find a way to repeat themselves, just with a new twist. Well, this is one of those instances and I’m not mad about it one bit! Give me all the arches!

Happy 2021!

Jen
